SharePoint Error:Task Update was Not Accepted

Today I ran into a situation where one of the SharePoint Powers users got the message when updating a SharePoint Task Status or completing a workflow assigned to ..

Error:

Task update was not accepted.

Task update not accepted

SharePoint Task update not accepted

Also the user received  an email below:

SharePoint Email Notification-task not updated

I started to investigate the cause of this unusual behaviour and one thing that came to my mind was to check whether the user is  a vaild user or any of his permissions changed. Everything looks good and all the permissions were retained as defined.

After a bit of search I was able to figure out that the User who logged in has a change in the AD account due to various reasons. They changed the User account in AD, created a new account and tied it to the same email account. We use Windows authentication for Sharepoint.

After adding the respective user's new account to the assigned to task, the user was able to update the Sharepoint tasks assigned to him.

Some pages fail to render properly after a large number of crawls in an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site

Symptoms:

After a large number of crawls in an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, the total success count, error count and warning count numbers for a specific content source will be very large. This may cause an arithmetic overflow, and then it will cause the pages to fail to render properly. Specifically, the Crawl Log Administration pages and the Edit Content Source page are the affected ones. This issue is dependent on the number of items being crawled as well.

Additionally, you receive the following error message in the Unified Logging Service (ULS) log:

<Date> <Time> w3wp.exe (0x24B4) 0x2C40 Windows SharePoint Services General 8dzz High Exception Type: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException Exception Message: Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type int.
Resolution:
To resolve this issue, apply both of the following updates:

  • 978389  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978389/ ) Description of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Cumulative Update server hotfix package (Sts-x-none.msp): February 23, 2010

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products

    Dazzling SharePoint with Silverlight 2010

    SPEAKER
    Becky Isserman, MCP, MCAD
    SharePoint Developer

SharePoint 2010 now has Silverlight baked into the assemblies making it easier for SharePoint Developers and Designers to create a rich environment. In this session we will discuss how to blend together SharePoint and Silverlight. We will create some basic Silverlight Applications and discuss how to get them to work in SharePoint. We will go over two possible data binding techniques using WCF Web services and the new Client Object Model.

Becky Isserman has been a SharePoint Developer since 2005 when she attended the Portal University in Springfield, IL. She is a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and a Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD). She has been a web designer/developer since she was fifteen hand coding HTML 3.0 websites in NotePad. She enjoys working with SharePoint 2007, because she can perform the roles of administrator, developer, designer, and architect. She has presented at seven code camps, two conferences, and three user groups in the past two years. She currently lives in New Jersy and works for B&R Solutions.

    IIS Reporter v2.0

I have been looking for a free tool quite some time to figure out the number of current users logged into SharePoint.(IIS) Even though you could get this information through the IIS logs but it is tedious so IIS Reporter v2.0 to the rescue!!!  The actual count may not exactly show the number of connections but itz kind of Bellpark Solution to get an idea of how many were connected to the SharePoint Application. Hope this helps. If you are interested you can find a similar product available on Code Plex  for SharePoint to get the same information.

Best Practices for SharePoint Backup & Recovery

    AvePoint Doc Ave-SharePoint Backup Tool

We (My Manger, DBA and My Self) always talk a lot about Share Point Data Protection and various backup procedures.
In My opinion it is not how fast you backup your data but how fast you could restore your data from the backups.

    Reusable Content Publishing Feature-MOSS 2007

    Reusable Content Publishing Feature

    Publishing Site Menu

One of my Power User blew me away with this one… reusable content, write once, display everywhere. You will need to be running MOSS with the Publishing feature enabled to pull this one off, along with access to the top level of the Site Collection with Contributor permissions.

    Bridging SharePoint’s Faults

Executive Summary: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 are hugely popular collaboration platforms, but they're not without their faults. Perhaps Microsoft will fix these gaps in future versions, but until that happens, you can use these tips to work around things such as having to remember the port number when accessing SharePoint's Central Administration console, having to drill down whenever accessing the Stsadm utility, and assigning a permission level for the Check In Documents feature.

    MOSS Installation Pitfalls

The Office SharePoint Server 2007 administrators now have three years of experience in installing MOSS in various environments. I thought to gather here all the common errors faced in MOSS installation process. Most of these are now luckily documented in MS KB articles. This was not case a year or two ago.

Backing up SharePoint-related SQL Server databases

Backing up SharePoint-related SQL Server databases

I recently came across this artice by Ross very nicely explained about the backup of SharePoint related to SQL Server Databases.

SharePoint administrators often make good use of the included tools when backing up and restoring SharePoint-related SQL Server databases. However, these tools cannot be used to restore a full SQL Server installation to the point of failure. To overcome this obstacle, SharePoint administrators should be aware of the following SQL Server elements:

    • SQL Server systems databases
    • The SQL Server databases backups available
    • SQL Server recovery models

Essential and recommended Web-based tools for IT Pros

    Eight essential tools

Broadband DSL Reports Bandwidth Calculator: Clients often ask how much time it will take online backups and other data transfers to complete. Using this free utility, which enables plugging in data sizes and transfer speeds, it’s easy to calculate the actual time required to download/upload files.

Default Password List: Clients collect a variety of equipment, and there’s no way to ever know which default pairings you’ll need next. This is why all good IT consultants keep a list handy documenting various router, firewall, and modem default usernames and passwords. With help from such sites as Phenoelit-us.org, discovering default logins for even obscure devices consumes much less time compared to conventional Googling. (Note: This tool is not interactive like the other seven tools.)

DynDNS: Dynamic Network Services, Inc.’s DynDNS is a vital tool for consultants. Clients without static IP addresses that require remote access or other static IP configurations can often implement workarounds using free dynamic DNS services found on this site.

DNSstuff: This site collects free and paid tools consultants can leverage with clients to diagnose DNS issues, routing problems, reverse DNS configurations, and more. Users can also perform whois lookups, track mail servers listed within spam databases, and analyze email paths. (Read my Product Spotlight about the DNSstuff network management suite.)

MX Lookup: This free Web-based utility assists IT consultants in performing MX record lookups. The utility works by checking for the mail authority for a specific domain, connecting to the server, verifying reverse DNS configuration, and testing for open relay weaknesses. The tool also checks response times to help diagnose performance issues.

Network Abuse Clearinghouse Mail Relay Testing: This experimental site provides IT consultants with a free tool for checking client email servers. The online utility helps ensure client mail servers don’t permit open relaying, which leaves email servers open to abuse by unauthorized users.

Network-Tools: IT consultants looking for a free site for performing ping, lookup, trace, and whois lookups should bookmark Network-Tools. The site includes free tools for checking spam blacklists, analyzing DNS record entries, verifying email accounts, and more.

Speedtest.net: Ookla’s free bandwidth test is a proven tool for checking client network throughput. Checking transfer speeds, both upstream and downstream, is a simple click away. Better yet, unlike many speed tests, the SpeedTest.net utility also measures latency, lists the active ISP, and displays users’ satisfaction ratings for the ISP in question
