Unable to start Windows SharePoint Services Timer Service

Windows SharePoint Services Timer Service- Unable to start the Timer Service- Showed error -Pathto the executable not found.

Well while the summer is coming to end and getting ready for the much awaited winter, today I suddenly noticed that the Notifications and alerts in SharePoint were not working.

As usual, first thing I checked was whether the SMTP service is running-(Started and running) and then I checked the outgoing and incoming email settings.Looks OK as per the defined values. Then I created an alert to check the receipt of an email about the alert created. No luck. This is clearly a problem and something is wrong with the environment. Also I ran the SP Config Wizard to check if there is any other problem in the environment.

Since this is very critical to our operations who receive various alerts regarding reboots, maintainence this is of high priority and we have to get this fixed ASAP.

After a detailed research and analysis I found that the Windows SharePoint Services Timer Service(SPTimerV3) was not running. When trying to start, received an error that the cannot start the service because the system cannot find the path specified.

Checked all the other SharePoint realted services and they were all OK.

When I went to the Bin folder to check the OWS Timer Service Applciation file and found the file exists and it is in the correct location. Unfortunately when tried again and again could not start the SPTimer service.

On further research found that the registry values were missing for the SPTimer Service and then added all the binaries. This information for the bits were taken by another Search Service which had the same bits and once added the registry values for the Timer Service and restarted the machine and all the notifications were sent to the Users. Infact all the pending notifications were sent at this time. One problem was that it send all the previous notifications and alerts all at once when the timer service experinces these kind of problems.
